Mario Ardemagni from Italy was a long time in the lead with Pascal Fetizon second. Sure, Ardemagni has his debut in ultramarathon running. He is a 2:22’ marathon runner who did some mountain races over 50K in Italy as well, but a 100K is new for him. As such we could expect that his final laps could become hard. It is Fetizon, the experienced 100K runner from France who take over the lead. Remember that Fetizon did only 50K in his first 100K start, just to taste 100K, as his coach said so. It was a good strategy, because since then he won several international championships, including an earlier win at Winschoten. Probably he will add a new championship to his list today.
The Italian coach, Franco Ranciaffi, a good friend of my and also a co-member in the IAU record committee, still has a gold medal in his hands with Monica Casiraghi in the women’s race. She is continuously together with Enrico Vedilei, but I can assure you she is not paced by him!
