THE NEW COURSE OF THE FLORENCE MARATHON
A new face to design the future of Florence Marathon. The classic Florentine race is set for a complete change in pace and philosophy for its 2010 edition, aiming for a more fluid route while maintaining all its original fascination.
The 27th Florence Marathon, due to take place on 28 November, is preparing a big surprise for the thousands of sportspeople from all over the world who will line up on the starting line: a new route that will be much faster, and will have just 40 meters difference of level between the departure and the arrival point, as required by the IAAF regulations. This novelty is the result of a common commitment with the town administration and with the declared intent of providing a further impulse and the prospect of ever greater quality to this international event that is the Florence Marathon. This change of philosophy is also an investment in the future and in the possibility to allow this city Marathon to grow. The decision made by the Marathon staff to abandon the previous version of the route was taken in order to be able to accomodate over 10.000 entries, and taking into account the constant increase in the number of registrations.
The starting line will continue to be that of the stupendous panoramic terrrace of Piazzale Michelangelo, that characteristic and unique point of departure of the most fascinating 42 km in the world, but this time the route will take us straight down to Piazza Ferrucci on the other side of the hill. This change of direction will allow runners to enjoy for the first time the wide tree-lined avenues of Florence, at the same time permitting the passage of large groups of athletes, and accompanying them nearby the old gates of the town toward the spectacular area of the Cascine Park. In the previous editions this part of the course had to be faced at about 30km from the start, notoriously the most difficult for a marathon runner. With the new route, the stretch through the park is from about the 8th to the 15th km, when legs are still fresh and the mind lucid. After the park, the route turns into the characteristic atmosphere of the “oltrarno”, the left bank of the river, going right on down to Varlungo before returning back toward the heart of the town and going through the center, along roads laden with history in front of the splendor of buildings and monuments of rare beauty: Palazzo Pitti, the Cathedral, Palazzo Vecchio, and just before arriving at that magnificent stage that is Piazza Santa Croce, after crossing over the amazing Old Bridge.
